When he returned, he became the editor of Pravda. During the civil war between 1918 and 1920, he played an important role on the military front. Stalin and the others attempted to regain their positions with help but were eventually forced to resign from the Communist Party's central committee. Later on in 1940, Stalin was the official head of the government and chairman of the state defense committee. Until 1934, Stalin pursued the Soviet policy of friendship with Germany. After Hitler became Germany's chancellor in 1933, Stalin joined the League of Nations to gain acceptance for the Soviet Union. Under Stalin's rule, the Soviet Union had become a powerful force in Eastern Europe. In the 1940s and 1950s Stalin made very few public appearances, and made strength of his followers.
